Below, we list down the absolute basic of yes’s and no’s in menswear dressing according to one’s height and weight. These are the points that every man needs to know in order to look their very best. So gentlemen, take out your pen and start taking notes.

SHORT

YES:

  1. Go with single breasted jackets. This gives a narrow effect to your upper body and add length to your frame. 
  2. Vertical lines, especially pinstripe, are the best.
  3. Solid darker and muted colours give the streamline and taller illusion.
  4. One colour worn head to toe makes you look taller. 
  5. If you have smaller body frame, go with flat fronted trousers that are neat, narrow and slightly cropped. For stocky or larger body frame, go with front pleat style.
  6. Choose belt and shoes to match as closely to your trouser colour to prevent the height being cut off at the waistline and therefore adding “inches” to your actual height.

NO:

YES:

  2. Make sure your shirts fit well at the neckline and the wrists.
  3. Double breasted jacket and detailed or exaggerated lapels will add width to the body figure
  4. Big double cuffs create distractions from the long arms.
  5. Straight cut pants add little width to the thin frame without losing his shape in too much material.

NO:

  1. Again, avoid baggy clothes as this will create a shapeless frame.
  2. Skin tight tops and bottoms will make you appear thinner than you actually are.
  3. Vertical stripes; it slims down the thin frame even more.

HEAVY

YES:

  3. Jacket with a deep “V” through lapels that elongate the chest area instantly gives a slimming effect.
  4. A pleated-waist trouser will work well if one has chunky legs.
  5. Play less with colour contrast to avoid breaking the height and width of the overall frame. This will also give a more sleeker appearance.

NO:

  1. Horizontal stripes.
  2. Bold colour contrast between top and bottoms. This will break the streamline effect and makes the frame looks larger than it really is.
